Joana Carneiro opens the symphony's season conducting a "Romance"-minded program featuring the premiere of a commissioned work by San Francisco maverick Paul Dresher, "Crazy Eights & Fractured Symmetries," Korngold's lush violin concerto played by Philippe Quint (pictured) and Stravinsky's classic "Petrushka."

Literary Arts
Oct. 19
Sarah Griffin makes her way back from Dublin, Ireland to celebrate the launch of her debut novel, "Spare & Found Parts." Griffin lived in San Francisco for about three years, an experience she documented in the indelible memoir "Not Lost," as well as in The Irish Times, to which she continues to contribute. The launch is at Booksmith, where Griffin worked for the last stint of her stay.

Guitarist Paul Mehling and his Gypsy jazz-loving compatriots in the Hot Club of San Francisco turn to the Beatles on their new CD, "John, Paul, George and Django" (poor Ringo). They're playing classic Beatles tunes their way, in arrangements that "serve the songs" rather than launch dazzling solos.

It will dock with the Tiangong 2 space station precursor facility within two days, conduct experiments in medicine and various space-related technologies, and test systems and processes in preparation for the launching of the station's core module in 2018. Space program commander-in-chief Gen. Zhang Youxia declared the launch a success at 7:46 a.m. (2346 GMT). Defense Minister Fan Changlong then read a congratulatory message from President Xi Jinping calling for China's astronauts to explore space “more deeply and more broadly.”
